On a cold winter’s night when I was all alone,

I heard the road outside run past my home,

Then I knew the tears would start,

I laid my head on my arms

       And wept from the heart.

And I wished that you could see,

And would take my hand & carry me.

Carry me like you did before,

All those times when I was sore,

When I was small & still had to grow,

       And the road was rocky

       And the way you’d show.

For I knew you would always be,

And would take my hand & carry me.

Carry me to the distant mark,

Through the mist & the swirling dark,

Through the pain & the sorrowed tears,

       Across the path

       Of all those years.

And how I wish that you could see,

For I miss those hands that carried me.
